Swedana Karma refers to thermal or sweating therapy in Ayurveda. The term sweda means sweat, and this therapeutic procedure intentionally induces sweating in the patient. Typically, Swedana is performed after the Snehana karma (oleation therapy).
There are different types of sudation treatments (Swedana Prakara) commonly used
1. Tapa Sweda: In Tapa Sweda, the affected body part is touched with heated cloth, metal plates, the forehead, or the palm of the hand.
2. Upanaha Sweda: This involves applying a warm poultice/ potli made from herbs depending on the disease and patient. The poultice can include grains, pleasant-smelling substances, and roots.
3. Ushma Sweda: Steam from hot substances is directed toward the body part. Materials like stones, pebbles, mud, leaves, grains, and dried dung are used for this purpose.
4. Drava Sweda: Warm liquid is prepared by boiling leaves of various medicinal plants along with fats, oils, ghee, and other suitable ingredients. This liquid is poured slowly over the affected area covered with cloth.
Benefits of Sudation Treatment:
1. Relieves stiffness, pain, and discomfort.
2. Promotes circulation and helps in detoxification.
3. Balances Vata and Kapha dosha.
Please note that excessive sudation can have many complications and adverse effects, so it is always recommended to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who knows the best-suited treatment for yourself.
